Do you think taking "an eye for an eye" TOO literally can be a bad thing?

In general, most folks have understood the text to mean that we must make fair recompense for any damage we have caused. there might be a place for a literal interpretation, but I believe that appropriate compensation for damages makes much more sense than punishing the perpetrator.
